Location: Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA
Agency Owner: Lockheed Martin
Project Status: Completed
Project Scope: Sauer provided the mechanical and miscellaneous steel services to support the renovation of Launch Complex 3E at Vandenberg AFB. Significant planning, coordination, and design assist efforts were provided to satisfy the fast-track schedule. Sauer was part of the Hensel Phelps Construction Team and was selected on a Best Value basis by Lockheed Martin in large part based on the recent successful similar efforts performed by this same team on LC-41 at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Sauer’s scope included the $12 million Fixed Launch Platform, which was completely fabricated in Sauer’s Oak Hill, FL facilities and shipped to Vandenberg. This launch platform is a 400 ton plate weldment fabricated from 12 ft tall plate girders which made up the base. The weldment was disassembled and shipped in 100 ton sections over land and across the country on a Sauer designed and engineered trailer from Oak Hill Florida to Vandenberg California. Weldment required certified welders and weld testing of full pen welds to AWS D1.1 standards. (9898)
