Project Scope: Sauer provided all mechanical and selected structural work for the new launch complex at Cape Canaveral Air Station, Florida. The work included all HVAC, plumbing and process piping systems such as rocket propellants, liquid and gaseous oxygen, hydrogen, helium, nitrogen and related systems. The launch pad area work included HVAC shelter housing three centrifugal chillers, pumps and cooling towers, HEPA filtering systems, support equipment building, autocoupler building, six individual tank farms with related piping, vessels, and cross-country piping. Sauer constructed the Mobile Launch Platform, which was completely fabricated in Sauer’s Oak Hill, FL facilities and shipped to Kennedy Space Center. The launch platform work included a 600-ton plate weldment fabricated from 12 ft tall plate girders in the base with a 170’ tall mast, which was shipped in large pieces, and assembled at Kennedy Space Center. Weldment required certified welders and weld testing of full pen welds to AWS D1.1 standards. Also included were large forgings and machined units that were installed to be used as the vehicle launch mounts. (9121)
